MILE BY MILE, WE WILL FIGHT ACCESSIBILITY ISSUES!
In this blog I will be reviewing Buc-ee’s convenience store and gas station in Temple, TX. Buc-ee’s is one of the largest convenience stores in Texas, as well as the U.S. Until recently it has been exclusive to Texas and it is known for being clean, friendly, and accessible. While I am reviewing the Temple location in this blog, I have visited several locations across Texas, and they are all very similar in their layout.
Accessibility: The entrance to Buc-ee’s is wide open with automatic doors and level ground. You will have no trouble entering or exiting the store, no matter your ability or situation. There are multiple entrances to the store and several ramps to get from the parking lot onto the sidewalk. The floors inside of the store are all smooth and level. The only issue I have is some of the displays and racks in the general merchandise area of the store are too close together to access from a wheelchair. Due to this one minor issue I give Buc-ee’s 4.5 stars.
Amenities: To start with, the check-out counters are at a perfect height whether you are standing or in a wheelchair and the credit card machines are easy to use. The food ordering and fountain drink counters are the same level as the check-out counters, make them equally user-friendly. The restrooms are very large and very clean, with more than enough stalls. There are multiple large handicap accessible stalls, with an oversized stall that is perfect for a power wheelchair. This stall also has a full door that provides exceptional privacy. The counters in the restroom are also at a good height for someone standing or in a wheelchair. I give Buc-ee’s 5 stars for its exceptionally good amenities.
Service: No matter where you go in the store there is an employee there ready and willing to assist. All of the employees at Buc-ee’s are friendly and smiling. No matter what you need, you can easily find someone to help you, which says a lot for such a large store. Buc-ee’s will receive 5 stars for service.
Parking: Buc-ee’s has a large, smooth parking lot with multiple parking areas. The store has multiple handicap designated parking spots right next to the building and close the entrances. As stated earlier in this blog, multiple ramps are present to get from the parking lot onto the sidewalk around the store. The only issue with the parking lot is the layout and the markings for traffic control. When the store is very busy, which is almost always, the lack of markings and traffic control can make navigating the area a challenge. I give Buc-ee’s 4.5 stars for parking.
The tally: Buc-ee’s in Temple, and for that matter all of the Buc-ee’s locations I have ever visited, is one of the best places to visit whether you are an able-bodied person, or someone with a disability. The stores are all very clean and easily accessible with great service, parking, and amenities. Other businesses, and not just convenience stores, could learn a lot from Buc-ee’s. Buc-ee’s receives an overall rating of 4.75 stars and I highly recommend visiting any of their locations whenever possible.
